Bucephalandra Velvet

Bucephalandra Velvet is an easy plant, perfect for beginners. It can be grown submerged or immersed. The plant is very slow growing, with narrow, pointed leaves. The margin is slightly curled, the tip blunt with a short, needle-like projection. Young leaves are light brown-red, later changing to dark brown-green. The large wide rhizome is much ramified, causing a dense, bushy growth habit. Grown submerged, the plant reaches a length of about 6-8cm. This plant can be propagated by cutting the rhizome and attached to driftwood and rocks using Epic Plant Glue or DOOA Terra Line.

EPICAQUATICS has now launched its very own locally grown Bucephalandras, which are sold in PODs 15cm x 13cm in size. Plant size may differ as no epiphyte is the same. These epiphytes have been specially bred to seamlessly transfer into an immersed setting.

Bucephalandra is an epiphytic aquarium plant so it can be attached to aquarium hardscape. Do not plant Bucephalandra in substrate and cover the rhizome. This will cause it to melt and rot. To achieve maximum colouration and growth, water column dosing is recommended. Bucephalandras cope with poor light conditions, however they develop their most beautiful look with medium lighting, good water current and constant nutrient and CO₂ supply. They also tolerate strong lighting, sufficient CO₂ and nutrient supply provided. The favourable temperature range is about 20 to 27°C.

We recommend to put Bucephalandras into already cycled aquariums. It is best to leave the plants in peace so they can grow. Sudden changes of parameters may lead to shedding of leaves, normally, however, the plants regrow slowly and produce new shoots on the rhizome. Bucephalandras are easily propagated by cutting terminal and side shoots that also promotes the ramification of the plant.
